Denia is a lovely city which we have visited often, and we’ve stayed the night a few times too, despite it being just 20 minutes drive from our home!

We spent a night in Denia to celebrate an anniversary in September 2023.  We stayed at Casa Olivera, just off Calle Loreto, a pedestrianised street full of bars and restaurants.  We were very happy with the accommodation.  We stayed in the studio apartment which had a very comfortable bed with super-soft sheets, walk in shower, kitchen area with good fridge – and wouldn’t hesitate about staying there again.

There are other apartments which have two bedrooms and some have a terrace.  Just note that there are some steep steps going up to the apartments, so they may not be suitable for people with mobility issues.

In November 2020 we were having withdrawal symptoms from lack of travel because of restrictions due to Covid-19, so we decided to support the local economy with a 1-night stay in Denia. This time we stayed at the Hotel Nou Roma.

The Hotel

Hotel Nou Roma, Denia is a lovely hotel close to the centre of Denia, 10-15 minutes walk from the sea and just one road off Calle Loreto. The hotel has a lovely outside courtyard and a popular restaurant.

Our room was in the annexe but very close to the main hotel, and our room was modern and stylish with natural stone walls, comfortable beds and large walk-in shower. Sheets are super-soft and there are large fluffy towels.

Breakfast

Breakfast was included in our rate and was excellent, with coffee, freshly squeezed orange juice, tostada with tomato, and a selection of hams, cheese and tortilla (served on individual plates rather than buffet style because of Covid-19).

Denia Bars & Restaurants

There are a huge number of bars and restaurants in Denia and some of our favourites are listed below.

We had a delicious lunch in 2023 at Mistico on Plaça del Convent, 6 just off Marques de Campo.  We had the 14 euro menu del dia.  For starters you are given a selection of 4 different tapas and for mains we had salmon and pork cordon bleu, both perfectly cooked and served with chips/potatoes and some vegetables.  Dessert or coffee is also included, as is one drink.   The dessert of pumpkin and chocolate tart was excellent and the coffee was the best we’d had in a while. We thought everything was excellent and will definitely return.  It’s open every day, but only for dinner on Sunday.

For dinner we had an excellent meal at La Cova Talla on Calle Loreto 10.  We shared a delicious warm duck salad with mango and tacos with chimichurri.  The apple tart with cinnamon was also delicious.  They also do a good value menu del dia and are open daily.  The place was busy (we had to sit inside as it was full outside) but there was only one waiter doing everything.  Despite being rushed off his feet, he did a great job and gave good service with a smile throughout.

A regular favourite for lunch in Denia is Saona on Plaça les Drassanes 2.  It’s a chain with several branches throughout Spain (also one in Javea) and they serve delicious food, a bit different from the usual Spanish fare.  Worth a mention is the delicious starter ofTempura vegetables with Kimchi mayonnaise.   Main course portions aren’t huge, but with three courses, including a good dessert selection, you won’t go hungry!

An excellent meal with delicious warm duck salad (see above), tacos, apple pie

Els Magazinos is a large food court close to the port just off Carrer Pont 19.  You can choose food from one stall, drinks from another or visit one of the indoor restaurants if you prefer.  When we went there we just wanted a glass of wine and a snack so we chose La Pause Francaise and got delicious super-fresh bruschetta.  We’ve passed through a couple of times at lunchtime and it has been very quiet, but we believe it is busier at night.

Lungo Mare on Marques de Campo is a chain with branches throughout Spain.  We have had a very nice meal there – a tasty salad to start followed by a very light, delicious pizza called Ombra della sera with pesto, crispy bacon, pepperoni, caramelised onion, taleggio cheese and red pepper.  The nicest pizza we’ve had in a long time.  The house red wine was very nice too!

We have visited Txoko Bar on Calle Loreto many times.  It’s a friendly bar, with well priced drinks.  They used to give you free tapas with every drink, but as of 2023 they appear to have stopped that.  It’s still worth a visit and they have a wide range of tapas available to buy.

As mentioned above, we have visited Denia many times and have stayed there a few times, usually when meeting up with friends.  We have stayed in a few nice small hotels, Hostal Loreto on Calle Loreto itself and Hotel Chamarel, just one road down on Carrer dels Cavallers, 13.  Both are nice small budget hotels in good central locations with lovely outside courtyards where you can have breakfast in the summer.

Denia Fallas

Denia Fallas

A good time to visit Denia is when the Fallas is on, usually in the middle of March.  Be sure to book ahead as it is a busy time, but you’ll enjoy a great party atmosphere,  fireworks and processions and it is fun to look at the amazing sculptures.  You can read about Denia Fallas here
